COMMAND SERGEANT MAJOR MARK A. SMITH

Command Sergeant Major, Maine Army National Guard

 

CSM Smith is a Maine native. He entered the Maine Army National Guard on November 23, 1985 and attended his initial training as a Carpenter/Mason at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. CSM Smith served in the 262nd Engineer Battalion from 1985 thru 1993 before transferring to the 133rd Engineer Battalion. In 1998, CSM Smith joined the Active Guard Reserve (AGR) program.

Throughout his thirty-three year career, CSM Smith has progressed through many positions of increasing responsibility. He has been a Carpenter/Mason, Construction Engineer, Administration Clerk, Training NCO, Readiness NCO and Battalion Operations NCO for the 286th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 120th Regional Support Group Operations NCO. He has served in Skowhegan, Bangor, Belfast and Augusta. He also served as a Readiness NCO for the 1136th Transportation Company and held the 1SG position. CSM Smith deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (2006-2007) as a Construction Management NCOIC with the 240th Engineer Group (Combined Task Force Chamberlain). Returning from Afghanistan CSM Smith served as the 286th CSSB and 120th RSG Operations NCO from 2007 to 2015. From 2015 to 2018 CSM Smith served as the State of Maine Training and Operations Sergeant Major. These assignments have prepared him for his Current position as Maines 14th State Command Sergeant Major.

His military education includes the Primary Leadership Development Course (RC), Basic Non Commissioned Officer’s Course (RC), Advanced Non Commissioned Officer’s Course, Sergeants Majors Academy, the Standard Army Training System and the Petroleum Supply Specialist School (92 F). He has served as a 51B MOSQ instructor during Operation Regeneration.

CSM Smith’s awards include the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster), the Army Commendation Medal (with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters), the Army Achievement Medal (with four Oak Leaf Clusters), the Good Conduct Medal (with 5 Clasps), the Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal (with Gold Star), the Humanitarian Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal (with "M" device and Gold hour glass), the Global War on Terror Service Medal, NCOES Ribbon (with numeral 4), the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon, the NATO Medal, and the Army Meritorious Unit Commendation. He has received the Maine Achievement Award, three Commander’s Awards, two Armed Forces Reserve Medals, a Maine Good Conduct Award and the Ice Guard Award.

CSM Smith lives in Hermon, Maine with his wife Jennifer and their three children, Baylee, who is a member of the Air National Guard, Derek and Alec. He is a member of the Archon Masonic Lodge in Dixmont and the Association of Quartermasters.
